Truth, Justice, Service
PTU started in 1912 as the "Pierson Memorial Bible Academy" that transcended denominations in Sinmun-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul, under the will of the American Missionary Pastor Arthur T. Pierson. On September 1st, 1913, he received permission from the government to establish the "Pierson Memorial Bible Academy Foundation".
Based on this, he contributed significantly to fostering Korean Christian leaders and evangelizing the people.
The anti-Japanese independence movement was conducted while studies were suspended (1941-1945) due to Japanese oppression. An independence movement was planned in the Pierson Memorial Bible Academy dormitory, and a large-scale national campaign was also prepared by printing tens of thousands of epigraphs. The university was reopened with the liberation of Korea on August 15th but was suspended again due to the Korean War. The university finally reopened three years later and, in 1968, was renamed "Pierson Bible Theological School".
On December 29th, 1980, "Pierson Memorial Academy" and "Pierson Bible Theological University" (a four-year university) were opened. New buildings were then completed in March 1981, and three departments (Dept. of Theology, Dept. of Social Welfare, Dept. of Music) began recruiting students. In August 1983, the school received official recognition as a "4-year university accredited school" by the Ministry of Education, and in March 1984, the university's name changed to 'Pierson Theological University’.
On November 28th, 1990, it was approved for reorganization as Pierson College and promoted to Pierson University on April 1st, 1992. On March 1st, 1996, it was renamed Pyeongtaek University.
As of 2012, there are 23 departments, including graduate schools, The Pierson Graduate School of Theology, The Graduate School of Social Welfare, The Graduate School of Logistics and Information, and The Graduate School of Counseling, and we are doing our best to realize the ideal of advanced education.
Based on the university's vision of "A university that fulfills the will of the Christian spirit", we aim to realize leading education. As a prestigious university that achieves the great meaning of God's will under the Christian spirit, we foster students who can contribute to the country's development.
In addition, we cultivate and train leaders of churches and society based on the Christian spirit and contribute to the development of churches and culture through foundational philosophy and Korean education.
With a history of more than 100 years since its establishment, we are making a new leap forward as the only comprehensive university in the Pyeongtaek area. In the era of the rapidly changing environment and the infinite competition between countries and universities, we are working hard to fulfill our role faithfully. In addition, we are becoming a solid educational institution that further strengthens connections with the local community and fosters talented people with humanity and professional skills.
